About
Birdwell Apiaries is a small North Texas operation run by someone who keeps bees because they're fascinating, useful, and occasionally stubborn — not because it looks good on a tote bag.
The work is hands-on: inspections, mite management, removals when bees show up where people don't want them, and teaching neighbors who want to keep colonies of their own without learning everything the hard way.

Why Bees Matter
Managed honey bee colonies in the U.S. have faced annual losses around 40% for more than a decade (39.9% in the most recent survey after two years that topped 55%). The primary ongoing pressure is the Varroa mite and the viruses it spreads, combined with habitat loss, pesticides, and weather extremes. Beekeepers replace those losses every year just to keep overall numbers stable — it takes constant work and real cost. Good management and local education make a measurable difference.
How You Can Help
Small, practical steps — no lecture required.
- Plant a variety of flowers and native plants that bloom across the seasons
- Avoid spraying insecticides on plants that are flowering (or choose bee-friendly options)
- Leave some wild or "messy" areas for forage and nesting
- Support local beekeepers and buy local honey when available
- Learn before you start keeping bees — good management matters
